Top Five Carnival Destination

Top Five Carnival Destination
By Maurício de Oliveira
Recife & Olinda
Localized in the Northeast of Brazil, Recife is the capital city of state Pernambuco, and Olinda had been the first capital. In the beginning of the Portuguese Colonization Period they had been important cities, because it was through their ports that our sugar production was shipped to supply almost the whole of Europe. But a lot of things changed when the Royal Family moved to Brazil and choose Rio de Janeiro to be the new capital city of the Portuguese Kingdom. Salvador was the first Brazilian capital city and it is relatively nearly to Recife and Olinda.
The best weather to visit these cities is in the Summer, between December and March, however it is during the Carnival – in February – that the whole year for the big shows and events that everyone wait.
During the Carnival the routine of its inhabitants changes completely. On first day of the Carnival, Saturday morning, in Recife, more than 1 million people follow a biggest Carnival block of the world - “Galo da Madrugada” (Morning Cock) – and you can follow without paying anything – in Salvador city you have to pay a lot of money to follow the “Trio Elétricos” (Electric trucks)- the sensation is simply indescribable. In Recife and Olinda you have the other tipical dances such the “maracatu” and “frevo”, both are beautiful.
The typical dance “frevo” completed one century last year and was proclaimed Cultural Patrimony with a big party and many artists and local politicians.
In the old downtown you can walk over some bridges that link with other parts of the city. In Recife you can participate in the different street Carnivals, mainly at might because during the day almost everyone goes to the beach.
In Olinda, the Carnival is like in Recife but the infrastructure is very different. Almost everything happens in the old downtown, where there aren’t big builds but old big houses. The streets are small and everybody stays together to spend the Carnival without problems or confusion like a big party, where happiness and pleasure can be seen in almost every face, all day and night.
The best time is when “the Olinda Giants Toys” (Bonecos Gigantes de Olinda) start to walk and dance between the people, they are simply incredible and show some local personality. Everybody dances like crazy. It’s beautiful and unforgettable.
Pay attention:
Take care on the beach, because there were already some shark attacks on surfers, mainly on Boa Viagem, the most famous beach.
